Russian physicists have learned to make ultra-precise nanogravure on glass

From conventional mechanical engraving on glass laser differs, first of all, by method, accuracy, size and its purpose. Suffice it to say that its parameters are measured in nanometers, which corresponds to approximately one thousandth of the thickness of a human hair.

A unique laser technology developed by Russian scientists, representing the leading physical institutions of the country, will help in the future when creating ultra-precise circuits.

The main role in this process is assigned to a femtosecond laser . In order for its beam to focus at the desired point, it passes through a glass microsphere and a special optical trap. First, the melted glass foams and the tubercles are formed. The second stage is treatment with an alkaline solution, as a result of which the tubercles “wash out” and in their place funnels with a depth of 20 nanometers are formed.

As a result of the experiment, the scientists managed to make an inscription on the glass with the size of 100 x 20 nm (width, depth) – ICP, translation into English of the abbreviation of one of the leading participants of the project – the Russian Institute of Chemical Physics.

This technology will find its application in the field of microfluidics or microhydrodynamics. The sphere of its activity is the study of microflows of liquids. In particular, the channels created with the help of laser nano-engraving can be filled with a special liquid that joins the elements into a single circuit.
